When it comes to braces for children, there is more choice than ever before.

Thanks to developments in modern orthodontics, there are different types of braces available from fixed metal braces, to clear ceramic braces, to aligner systems such as Invisalign. Each option has its own benefits, and the most suitable treatment will depend on your child’s needs and their teeth alignment.

That’s why we offer a range of orthodontic treatments as we understand that every child is different. Whilst Invisalign can be a great option for children who would prefer a discreet solution, fixed braces are equally effective.

An issue many parents face with the NHS is eligibility and waiting lists. This is where private orthodontics comes in, allowing children to enjoy a straighter without the same delay.

At Pearl Dental in Birmingham, we’ve helped lots of children enjoy a healthier, straighter smile. We know how daunting it can be stepping into a dental clinic, which is why our friendly team is on hand to answer questions that either you or your child has. It’s important everyone feels informed, and we also offer sedation treatments to help the process feel less overwhelming.

Is Invisalign Available on the NHS?

Invisalign is not available on the NHS as fixed, metal braces are the offering.

Furthermore to qualify for braces on the NHS, your child must meet a strict criteria called the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) which scores teeth depending on the severity of misalignment. Using this system, if your child’s teeth score 5 or 4, they will qualify for braces, if they score 3, the clinician will assess other factors such as the appearance of teeth, however if they score a 2 or 1, they will not be eligible for NHS-funded treatment.

This can be frustrating for both parents and children who are self-conscious about the appearance of their smile. Furthermore, alignment issues can worsen as the jaw develops, so many parents want to address these issues early.

Combined with long NHS waiting lists, which can be anywhere from 2-4 years, this can lead lots of parents to consider private treatment for their child.

Different Types of Braces for Children

There are different types of braces available from fixed braces, to Invisalign depending on your child’s individual case. This is why a consultation is necessary so we can assess the best route forward and create a personalised treatment plan.

Below are the different types of braces we offer for children at Pearl Dental:

Invisalign

As a global, clear aligner system, Invisalign has transformed more than 23 million smiles worldwide and is often the brand people are most drawn to. That’s because of the ease and convenience Invisalign provides, allowing for effective tooth movement with little disruption to their routine.

The aligners can easily be removed for eating, drinking, and brushing, allowing children to maintain good oral hygiene with little fuss. This is also a big plus for parents, however children must be compliant with treatment and wear their aligners for 22 hours a day.

Clear, ceramic braces

Clear, ceramic braces are also a popular choice for children as they work similarly to fixed, metal braces – only discreetly. Instead of having metal brackets and wires which are visible, ceramic braces are tooth-coloured to match the rest of your smile.

This can make them a desirable option, especially if children are self-conscious but parents still want peace of mind that the braces are fixed.

Self-ligating / Damon braces

Self-ligating braces, such as the popular Damon system, use a small, built-in sliding clip on each bracket to hold the wire in place, allowing teeth to move without the need for elastic ties. Unlike traditional braces, which can use rubber bands or ties to secure the wire to each bracket, this can offer a more convenient solution.

Fixed, metal braces

Fixed braces use metal brackets and wires to securely move teeth into place. The clue is in the name as they are ‘fixed’ to teeth which allows for controlled movement. This can be reassuring for parents who are concerned about whether their child will wear their Invisalign aligners consistently, as this is important for keeping treatment on track.

However, every child is different, so your orthodontist will discuss the different options and recommend the most suitable type of braces for their needs.

The Benefits of Choosing Invisalign for Children

Invisalign allows for effective tooth movement whilst also being virtually invisible. However, Invisalign is just one of the orthodontic options available at Peal Dental, and it won’t necessarily be the right choice for every child.

The good news is that choosing private orthodontic treatment gives you access to a range of options without the long waiting times associated with NHS treatment. If you child is suitable for Invisalign, some of the benefits are below:

Easy to brush

As Invisalign aligners can be removed, children can pop them out when they need to eat, drink, brush, or floss. This can improve their oral hygiene, which in turn, can lead to stronger teeth and gums. Furthermore the aligners themselves are easy to clean, so children can keep them in good condition in just a few simple steps.

Virtually invisible

The fact Invisalign is virtually invisible is one of the key benefits for children and teens. By being able to move their teeth discreetly, without anyone really noticing, it can help boost their confidence.

It’s important to highlight that for Invisalign to be effective, aligners must be worn for 22 hours a day.

Smooth and comfortable

As Invisalign aligners are made from smooth plastic, they are designed to fit snugly over children’s teeth, making them a comfortable choice. Their lightweight design also means they sit closely against the teeth, which can help minimise any irritation to the inside of the cheeks and lips.

"I’ve nearly completed my Invisalign now and so happy with how my teeth are looking! It’s been such a smooth plan, everyone in Pearl Dental is so lovely and helpful."

Removable for mealtimes

Invisalign aligners can be easily removed when it’s time to eat, offering children added flexibility throughout the day, whether they’re at school or at home. They can simply remove their aligners before eating, then brush their teeth and pop them back in afterwards.

Safer for contact sports

Invisalign can be a great option when children play contact sports such as football, rugby or hockey. That’s because their gums are protected by a smooth, comfortable aligner which can reduce the risk of abrasion should they encounter a collision or fall.

Furthermore, clear aligners can be removed if needs be during contact sports and put safely in a container. The amount of time they aren’t worn should be balanced with the effect on treatment progress.

Early intervention

Instead of waiting for your child’s alignment issues to worsen, many orthodontists suggest an early assessment of their teeth around the age of 7. Whilst no treatment will necessarily take place at this age, it gives you a chance to understand the different options available.

The more information you can gather at this stage the better as it allows you to make a more informed choice when orthodontic treatment starts. You’ll also be able to ask any questions in advance, allowing both you and your child to feel more prepared and comfortable from the start.

Range of payment plans for parents

Whilst you might be concerned that Invisalign for your child will be expensive, there are different payment plans available to help spread the cost of care. At Pearl Dental, we’ve partnered with Chrysalis finance to offer our patients more ways to pay for treatment.

The cost of Invisalign per month at our clinic starts from £31.45 per month for Invisalign Express, but this will all be discussed during your consultation. You can learn more about financing options at Pearl and calculate an estimated cost of your plan here.
